Differences in handedness and language abilities are associated with what is referred to as hemispheric specialization, or left-right differences between the two halves of the brain. Historically, scientists have considered hemispheric specialization a unique human trait. This book describes the recent evidence that challenges the claim that hemispheric specialization is unique to humans and also shared with many other animals, notably other nonhuman primates. Contributors to this volume describe evidence of behavioral and brain asymmetries in primates and the collective studies aim to provide a framework for understanding the evolution of hemispheric specialization in primates.
